About Capezio
-Last: The last is the form or mold on which the pointe shoe is constructed. The shape of the last is designed to represent the dancer's foot. This form provides the interior shape of the box and internal fit of the shoe. A different last is used for each size and width within a given style. -Box: The box covers the toe area, providing the support each dancer requires to stand on pointe. The box consists of a combination of linings made of natural materials and Capezio's specially formulated glue. The wings are an extension of the box and provide lateral support covering the bunion and little toe areas. -Vamp: The vamp refers to the length of the upper from the top of the platform to and including the binding located at the center front of the shoe. -Throat: The throat is the shape of the upper which presents and flatters the arch. It is the open area located from one side seam to the other through the center front of the shoe. -Drawstring/Binding: The drawstring is encased in the binding which is the finished edge of the upper. This binding provides strength to the upper. When pulled, the drawstring conforms the upper to the dancer's foot. -Platform: The platform is the outer flat tip of the box which allows the dancer to stand on pointe. -Crown: The crown refers to the vertical height between the vamp and the sole. -Pleats: The pleats are located on the underside of the box where the fabric is folded into the sole. -Side Quarters: The side quarters are the sections of satin from the side seams to the back stay (fabrics that covers the center back seam) at the dancer's heel. -Sole: The outer sole is made of either buffed or scored leather to provide traction. This sole is internally stitched to the upper. -Shank: Made of either leatherboard or redboard composition, the shank is the backbone of the shoe. The shank is located under the socklining, which is the material that lines the interior of the shoe and bears the Capezio logo. The function of the shank is to provide support to the arch. Capezio leather shanks range in strength from light #1 to very strong #6. A Capezio firm redboard shank is also offered. The dancer's strength and technical ability will determine the appropriate shank. |
